c.1904 J Gouick Dundee Center Shafted "Perfect" Patent Pend. Putter - Less Than 10 Known Examples!
Categorize this under patent golf clubs that are unforgetable based off of appearance, for those lucky enough to have seen one of the said to be less than 10 copies still in existence. There is the Pat version of 20623 and then the earlier and even rarer Patend Pending (PTP) featured here!
John Gouick's "Perfect" putter is best described by the inventor himself, as told by the refrenced 'Golfing' March 30, 1905 issue and later author Jeff Ellis' The Clubmaker's Art page 223. "The "Perfect" putter iron is of rectangular shape, looking on its face. The thickest part of the iron is along the bottom, which is half inch, and is gradually rounded up the back to three-sixteenths of an inch. The weight at centre of bottom is increased by the socket handle being carried down the back to the bottom edge (note measurements and design are slightly different on this patend pending version). By this formation - when the club is drawn back - it has to itself a forward inclination and a truer pendulum-like stoke than any other golf putter not thus formed. The bottom edge is rounded and curved at the ends, so that it cannot engage with the turf, which all flat edged clubs do (another change from the pending to the pat. version). The head and socket are one solid piece." The author goes on to state that it was to provide " handles which are non-sliping and putting irons which are in correct balance and are of proper shape.
It features a diamond cross-hatched groove pattern across the entirety of the striking face. The reverse side of the clubhead is marked with a stamped oval containing the text J. GOUICK DUNDEE on the left and PTD NO 20623 on the right. The head is mounted on a tapered wooden shaft and finished with a black leather wrap grip. The grip is secured at its base with black twine whipping.
