Two Pieces of Ken Venturi Golf Memorabilia Including Signed Sports Illustrated Magazine and 1964 US Open Commemorative Plate
This lot consists of two pieces of vintage golf memorabilia celebrating professional golfer Ken Venturi and his association with the U.S. Open Championship.
The first item is a vintage copy of Sports Illustrated magazine, dated June 13, 1966. The front cover features professional golfer Ken Venturi alongside a model of a golf course, corresponding with the featured cover story, The U.S. Open in San Francisco by Ken Venturi. The cover is hand-signed Ken Venturi in black marker across a purple graphic section. A paper subscriber mailing label is affixed to the bottom-left corner addressed to Richard McCormack in Niles, Michigan.
The second item is a commemorative ceramic plate produced for the 64th National Open Championship held in 1964 at the Congressional Country Club in Washington, D.C., a tournament famously won by Ken Venturi. The off-white plate features a central color transfer-printed illustration of the Congressional Country Club course and clubhouse. The inner scalloped rim is decorated with gold-toned painted dashes, and the outer rim is finished with a gold-toned border. The underside features a circular black backstamp that reads Southeastern Advertising, Inc. along the top, Rocky Mount, N.C. along the bottom, and depicts a map outline of several Southeastern states in the center with the text Designers of Ideas. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
