Two Early Golf Industry Invoices: James Gourlay, 1924, and Atlantic Products Corp, 1930
Two original paper invoices documenting the early 20th-century golf equipment industry in Scotland and the United States.
The first document is a handwritten invoice from James Gourlay, identified as a "Golf Cleek and Iron Maker" located at Links Avenue, Carnoustie. Dated April 29, 1924, it is addressed to Messrs R. Simpson & Son, also of Carnoustie. The invoice details an order for thirty-six golf club heads, specifically "12 maxwell mid Irons," "12 mashie irons," and "12 Driving Irons." The letterhead features a printed illustration of a golfer in the upper left corner and includes the printed text "Bot. of JAMES GOURLAY" and "Any Kind of HEAD COPIED." A circular purple ink stamp is applied at the bottom center, featuring the characters "W.B.P." and "B." with a handwritten signature through the center.
The second document is a printed "UNIFORM INVOICE" from the Atlantic Products Corporation, identified as "MANUFACTURERS OF DISTINCTIVE GOLF BAGS AND SPECIALTIES OF LEATHER AND CANVAS" based in Trenton, New Jersey. The invoice is dated June 23, 1930, and is addressed to Ralph G. Tyler & Company in Muncie, Indiana. A red logo for "Par-Bag" is printed in the upper left. The document lists thirteen distinct quantities of golf bags categorized by style numbers such as 2005, 2037, and 56, with unit prices and net amounts totaling $108.50. A 2% discount is calculated by hand, resulting in a net total of $106.33. The invoice bears a large hollow-letter "PAID" stamp in gray ink, which includes a handwritten signature and the date "6/27/30." A guarantee statement at the bottom references the "Federal Child Labor Act, of September 1, 1916."..
