Scarce 1899 Open Championship at St. George's Program w/ Pairings - Harry Vardon Win
It's been a little while. Over 125 years ago this 1899 Open Championship program with pairings was produced for Harry Vardon's victory at St. George's Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent. There has been only one other example of this program offered at public auction, twice, with its most recent result of $18,574 in July of 2025. That example was the same exact format as this before you, with printed scores through the first two rounds versus this second example including all four round scores. Listed titleholder Harry, 'The Stylist' adopted the Champion Golfer of the Year moniker for the third of a record six times, pairing it with a US Open the following year in which we sold the ball for a record $194k last year. The eldest major's 1899 edition saw the cream rise to the top, with Vardon's 310 score prevailing by five strokes as noted on the post-final round printing.
'St. George's Golf Club' runs across the top of this extremely rare acquisiton Opportunity underlined by the lead 'Open Golf Championship.' Each of the four rounds records the scores of players who completed the four rounds of the championship played on June 7th and 8th, 1899. '310' is hand-written in foutain pen just below, along with the scores to the right of each of the top 6 finishers - and left of their prizes including Vardon's 'Gold Medal and Cup' winner's awards.
The bottom right features the printed attribution By Order, William Rutherford, Hon. Secretary, while the bottom left corner identifies the printer as Pain and Sons, Printers, Sandwich.
