President Richard Nixon's Personal Set of Three Wilson X-31 'President Nixon' Driver, 4 & 5 Woods w/ USGA Museum Provenance

United States of America's 37th President, Richard Nixon, served from 1969 until 1974 as President and 1953 to 1961 as Vice President. The three personal Richard Nixon Wilson Woods including the driver in this lot date to Nixon's President office occupancy. These woods were played with by Nixon and then sent in to be refinished by Wilson at his request. Play is aparent, supported by visible underlying wear on the sole plate. The significant personal identifier 'PRESIDENT NIXON' is stylized and found across the crown of each of the driver, four and five wood. Like other presidents that enjoyed the occasional round (playing with their Secret Service men not far away), Nixon was no professional. He was, however, a passionate golfer - legend has it that Nixon broke 80 on one occasion and had a three hole course built at his house in San Clemente, California. President Richard Nixon would pass away in 1994, leaving a polarizing legacy.

While these are not directly from The White House, this set was sourced through the family of pro Tom McNamara, who's son Leo McNamara was the longtime Wilson Staff rep for the players and celebrities in charge of providing equipment from the manufacturer. Where's the 2 wood? Additional provenance and paperwork comes in the form of a letter of USGA letterhead stating that Leo donated the 2-wood of this set to the USGA initially in 1979 and another letter in 2014. "Of course the President Nixon wood will go into our US Presidents display" is what the 1979 letter states to Leo, the 2014 specifically mentioning "2 wood." Finally the letter to Janet on letterhead lists "President Nixon's, Wilson X-31 #2 Wood" as the fourth line item in which the USGA would be recieving. It comes in its original Wilson box with "President Nixon" handrwitten in faded marker on the end. This executive level acquisition of a group of three Richard Nixon clubs should command well warranted attention from those with an interest in US Presidential golf. 41 1/2" - 43".
