Payne Stewart's 1991 Dutch Open Winning Used Wilson The Whale HM-40 Driver w/ Original Headcover & Provenance Letter
Accompanying Payne Stewart's 1991 Dutch Open winning, used Wilson The Whale driver is a printed letter of provenance dated May 20, 2026. The letter from Leendert de Goeij with contact information, details the club being gifted to him by professional golfer Payne Stewart during the 1991 Dutch Open at Noordwijk, where de Goeij worked as a sports manager and massage therapist. de Goeij worked with the eventual three-time major winner multiple times and Stewart came back with this after winning in appreciation less than a month before his US Open win at Hazeltine. The gold shaft has been photo matched to the digital reference shot that is found in this lot - a unique feature that, even as he continued to use this driver, the color of the shaft would be switched out. The Wilson The Whale HM-40 Gold #1 driver is presented with its original black knit and plush headcover. The club is constructed with a black composite head and a wood-grain laminate face insert. It is fitted with a gold-toned graphite shaft marked FIRM GRAPHITE and a black Wilson grip. The sole plate of the clubhead is inscribed with The WHALE, a graphic of a whale, the number 1, and the text System-45. The crown of the head is marked with the Wilson name and logo. The included headcover has a rectangular patch embroidered with HM-40 GOLD WHALE BY Wilson. The letter of provenance from our consignor with that story as pictured will come with the club. Please inspect the accompanying lot photos for a detailed condition report.
