Original 1899 Florida East Coast Golf Club Championship Cup Poster - Framed
It was dubbed the 'Winter Championship of the United States' by the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper publication the following day. Before you is one of the earliest United States Golf Tournament original posters you will see, this work of art featuring the 1899 Florida East Coast Golf Club Championship Cup with both the trophies and contestants vying for them. Won by B.F. Schurmeier of St. Paul, Minnesota. The annual contest took place in the oldest city in the United states, St. Augustine, FL. Brother T.L. Shurmeier also competed and is pictured representing the St. Paul Country Club. Second prize went to Robert C. Watson Jr. of Islip, Long Island, New York (Westbrook Golf Club) who fell short in the final. Tied after 14 holes, Schurmeier won three straight holes finishing Watson 2 and 1. Henry Morrison Flagler, founder of Florida's East Coast Railway was working on a substantial expansion laying down track from St Augustine to Miami. Connicent of pairing golf courses with the luxurious hotels he was errecting on that route, Flagler created the Florida East Coast Golf Club in 1898. This connected membership of his golf links of St. Augustine with those at Ormund, Palm Beach, Miami and Nassau per 'The History of The City of Tallahassee's Jack Gaither Golf Course' club history. Tastefully framed to 30 1/2" x 25" and likely appealing to both golf advertising and art collectors, this 1899 Florida East Coast Golf Club championship poster is a prime example of an early US-based tournament work.
