Matching 1917 Shinnecock Sterling Silver Spoon & Postcard
Here we have an amazing combination of a “South Hampton
Golf Club” sterling spoon and a color postcard featuring same
Shinnecock Hills Golf Club clubhouse photo that was used for
the spoon.
The spoon was crafted by Gorham and bears their mark ( Lion,
anchor and “G” to the underside of the spoon handle. It is
also marked Pat 1917 sterling. The face of the spoon is finely
etched with an image the Shinnecock Hills clubhouse ( again,
matching the clubhouse photo on the postcard. The spoon is
captioned “ Southampton Golf club Southampton
The postcard is also captioned “ Southampton Golf Club
Southampton N.Y.” It is postmarked for 1919 which is period
consistent with the patent date on the spoon.
Interestingly both the spoon and postcard feature the famous
Shinnecock Hills golf clubhouse but are labeled with the Long
Island town where Shinnecock resides.
The combination of the spoon and related postcard are
unique, scarce and highly collectible artifacts from days gone
by of the site of this year’s US Open Championship.
