Elegant 1899 Palmetto Golf Club Sterling Silver Trophy Vase
Composed of sterling silver and hailing from Palmetto Golf Club, the longest continually operated 18 hole golf club second to only Chicago Golf Club, is this stunning prize from 1899. There has been work done by Donald Ross in 1928 including work on the irrigation system and Dr. Alister MacKenzie in 1932 with his thoughts on a layout. Harry Vardon, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead were some of the famous golfers to tee it up at Palmetto Golf Club since its original inception of 1892. This Trophy carries all of the pertinent tournament information from well over a century ago on the base. The precious metal sterling silver hallmark is written on the trophy base. The piece features a flared trumpet-shaped body with a silver-gilt (vermeil) exterior finish. It is supported by a stepped, circular pedestal base. The front of the vase is adorned with an elaborate applied silver cartouche, featuring a central medallion topped with a royal-style crown, flanked by floral swags and crossed torches. The central medallion is engraved with the initials V E over M, separated by a horizontal line. The upper rim and the foot are both finished with an applied foliate laurel leaf band. The underside of the base contains several stamped and engraved marks. Stamped in the metal are the words STERLING and 1342, the manufacturer name HOWARD and CO, the location NEW YORK, and the date 1898. Centrally engraved in cursive script is the inscription Palmetto Golf Club, Family Foursomes, and the date March 20th 1899. 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" x 6 1/2".
