Early 20th Century William Gibson Capper and Capper Superior Hand-Forged Cleek with Hickory Shaft
This early 20th-century golf club is a hand-forged cleek, an iron-headed club characterized by a long shaft and low loft. The iron head was manufactured by William Gibson of Kinghorn, Scotland, for the high-end American men's retailer Capper and Capper, which operated in Chicago and Detroit. The reverse of the clubhead features a stamped rose symbol, the well-documented maker mark of William Gibson. Additional stamped markings include GUARANTEED HAND FORGED in an arc at the top, ACCURATE with an arrow pointing toward the heel, a script signature for Capper and Capper over the word Superior, the club designation CLEEK, and the alphanumeric code S C 1. The clubface features a punched or dotted pattern consisting of alternating circular indentations and short horizontal lines, a design intended to increase backspin and grip. The club is constructed with a tapered hickory wood shaft and a dark brown leather wrap grip.
