This mid-19th-century steel engraving is by Albert Henry Payne after a painting by Adriaen van Ostade. The scene depicts a classic Dutch winter landscape featuring figures on a frozen canal or river. In the foreground, individuals are shown socializing and using a horse-drawn sled, accompanied by dogs. To the left, the composition includes a rustic thatched cottage with a smoking chimney and a bare, gnarled tree. The plate is inscribed at the lower left v Ostade pinx and at the lower right A. H. Payne sc. A trilingual title is centered below the image reading Paysage d'Hiver en Hollande. / Dutch Winter Scene. / Hollandische Winter-Landschaft. The print is housed in a substantial period ebonized wood frame decorated with stenciled gilt foliate and geometric borders and a gilded inner slip. The reverse of the frame retains its original wooden backboards.
