A Group of Five Antique Gutta-Percha and early Rubber-Core Golf Balls
Group of five antique golf balls, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. This collection demonstrates the evolution of golf ball technology during the transition from solid gutta-percha to early rubber-core construction. The group features various early aerodynamic cover patterns designed to improve flight stability. Two balls feature the Bramble pattern, characterized by raised circular bumps. Two balls display the Mesh or Lattice pattern, consisting of a raised grid of squares. One ball is a dark, possibly unpainted gutta-percha example with a worn surface texture. On the dark ball, there are impressed characters along the upper edge; one section shows the characters "BY" and another section shows "ADAMS". The remaining balls bear no legible maker's marks or stamps. The construction includes both solid gutta-percha examples and early rubber-core balls with gutta-percha covers, with some dark fibrous interior material visible where covers have failed..
