This is a collection of vintage softcover magazines titled The Southern Golfer, published by the Mississippi Golfer Publishing Co., Inc. (later Southern Golfer Publishing Co., Inc.) in Jackson, Mississippi. The collection includes several issues dating from 1957 to 1959, including August 1957 (Vol. 3, No. 8), September 1957, June 1958, August 1958, October 1958 (Vol. 4, No. 10), December 1958, February 1959, March 1959, and April 1959. Each issue is quarto-sized with stapled paper wraps and features illustrated covers in various colors including green, red, blue, and purple.
The publication was founded in 1954 by Paul Tiblier, with Maynard M. Craft serving as executive vice-president and associate editor. The magazines document regional golf news from the American South, including tournament results for the Deep South Four Ball, the Mississippi State Open, and the Gulf Coast Invitational. Cover illustrations and interior articles feature various golfers such as Mickey Wright, Lloyd Mangrum, Ben Hogan, Jimmy Demaret, Byron Nelson, and Sam Snead. One issue features a cover photograph of the first hole at Winged Foot Golf Club.
The interiors contain tournament scoreboards, club directories, and period advertisements for regional businesses and golf facilities, such as the Alexandria Golf and Country Club, Colonial Country Club, Great Southern Country Club, Tupelo Country Club, Friendship House, and the Jacksonian Highway Hotel. Many issues bear a property stamp and mailing label on the back cover for the Palos Verdes Golf Club, Box 1145, Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.
