1927 US Amateur Golf Championship Official Souvenir Book Minikahda Club - Bobby Jones Win

"The Atlantan is simply burning up the golf course, making par look silly and taking the hearts out of his competitors," as stated by the Jersey Journal newspaper on August 27, 1927. The USGA astutely awarded Bobby Jones the number 1 seed. In the semi-finals Jones retired the "Father of Amateur Golf" Francis Ouimet 11 and 10. During the 36-hole matches Jones would card scores of 67 in the qualifying round against Maurice McCarthy, followed by 68 against Jimmy Johnston in the quarterfinals, 69 in the semi-finals against Ouimet and a 67 again in the finals downing Chick Evans 8&7. This tournament was only a month after breaking St. Andrews' four round course record, which stood since 1908, to win the Open by six strokes.

This very program was purchased the week of August 22nd-27th by a patron taking in Bobby Jones' third of five US Amateur wins and seventh major championship - emerging as one of a handful of survivors from that historic performance narrowly preceding the Great Depression in impeccable condition. An over exuberant fan had written on the front “Robert H. Bowen Page 16- Played Monday” refering to a for for the tourney resulting in a finals match that gave Bobby Jones his third Havemeyer Trophy win in four years. Beyond the 1927 program, memorabilia from this tournament is very scarce.

Bobby Jones would win his 3rd USGA Amateur Championship at the Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1927, with many saying it was one of the most dominating victories of his illustrious career - hard to argue that. The USGA, 11 years after the US Open, made a return trip to Minikahda for the U.S. Amateur Championship setting the scene for Jones' revenge after falling short at the tournament in 1926.

This program is a must have for Bobby Jones Collectors. This intact 1927 US Amateur publication has the original color foldout, along with a prevue of the venue and competitors setting the stage for Bobby Jones' historic victory. The USGA, 11 years after the US Open, made a return trip to Minikahda for the U.S. Amateur Championship. Bobby Jones was ready to return to the top of his game after missing the title the previous year - some might say this would be one of his more dominating victories of his illustrious career. Of note to golf historians and those with an interest in the legendary course architect Donald Ross should know that there is a hole by hole depiction that takes an in-depth look at Ross' 1920 revision of the course. Program is intact and in fair to good condition, with overall wear that is to be expected for this program coming up on a century of circulation with photos providing a detailed condition report of this tough acquisition.
