1914 Barham Downs Golf Club Captains Prize Sterling Silver Presentation Trophy Bowl
The Barham Downs Golf Club in Kent
was founded in 1890 but closed after
WW1
Here we have a rare artifact from that
club in the form of a finely crafted
sterling bowl given as the Captains Prize
of the club in 1914.
The trophy weighs a significant 220
grams. A sterling silver presentation bowl featuring a deep circular form with a flared rim and a pedestal foot. The lower half of the body and the foot are decorated with repoussé spiral gadrooning that terminates in circular bead motifs. The interior of the bowl displays a gold wash (vermeil) finish. The front of the bowl is engraved with the text BARHAM DOWNS GOLF CLUB, THE CAPTAINS PRIZE, 1914, framed by linear decorative motifs.
The side of the bowl bears a series of four hallmarks. These include the maker mark in an oval cartouche for Alexander Clark & Co Ltd, an anchor symbol for the Birmingham Assay Office, a lion passant mark indicating sterling silver purity, and a date letter O in a shield-shaped cartouche corresponding to 1913. 6" x 6" x 4 1/4".
