1904 Isle Of Purbeck GC Pilot Cup Medal Presented by President Ralph Bankes to Winner Gerald Robinson

This lot features a significant piece of early 20th-century golfing history in the form of an award medal from the Isle of Purbeck Golf Club. Struck in a bronze or copper alloy, the medal features a high-relief obverse depicting the ruins of Corfe Castle, captioned CORFE CASTLE, 1660. The reverse is dedicated to the club's internal competitions, featuring the inscription ISLE OF PURBECK GOLF CLUB. The medal is professionally engraved: PRESENTED BY RALPH BANKES PRESIDENT, awarded to Gerald Robinson for the PILOT CUP. 1904. The date 1895 is at the bottom, likely referencing the year the medal was struck since the course was founded in 1892. Ralph Bankes was a member of the prominent Bankes family of Kingston Lacy, who historically owned Corfe Castle. This medal is in excellent historical condition, displaying a deep, uniform chocolate-brown patina. The relief remains sharp, and the engraved text on the reverse is crisp and easily legible. 1 1/2” in diameter.
