1899 US Women's Amateur at Philadelphia CC Contestant Badge Pin
Extremely rare and early might both undersell this first example we have seen of the 1899 US Women's Amateur at Philadelphia CC Contestant Badge Pin. Design elements in which we have also never seen, this pin was issued to just players of the event to be worn during competition. Over 125 years later this appears to be the only survivor. Golf at the highest level, the US Women's Open had yet to be established and this was only the fifth playing of the US Women's Amateur. Ruth Underhill bested Margaret Fox 2&1 in the finals of the matchplay championship. Hosted at the Philadelphia Country Club between October 10 and 14, 1899, this event marked the fifth U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. The front of the pin features a central raised grid motif. The outer rim is struck with the inscription WOMENS NATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT and PHILADELPHIA COUNTRY CLUB, separated by two five-pointed stars. An inner circular band contains the dates OCTOBER 10-14 and 1899. The reverse side presents the incuse impression of the obverse and is equipped with a pin stem and C-clasp. The metal shows a dark, aged patina throughout.
