Tiger Woods Signed Golf Ball @ 1993 U.S. Amateur
Offered in this lot is one of the earliest known, with provenance to date of signing, Tiger Woods autographed golf balls. It was signed in 1993 on the day Tiger Woods was defeated in match play 2&1 by Paul Page in the round of 16 in the U.S. Amateur. Tiger signed this golf ball as a 17 year old. He would come back the following year to win his first of three straight U.S. Am titles as an 18 year old. The youngest champion in the history of the event which dates to 1895. One of the earliest known Woods signed golf balls, this Titleist 3 with BCH Insurance logo ball also features one of if not the finest known Woods autographs on a ball. It is full every letter as was traditional for Tiger signatures in this time frame and presents as a pure "10" for clarity of autograph. The following is the provenance of how this golf ball came to be signed by the teenage golf prodigy.
Our consignor Brian Boales (who has had this ball in his possession since the day it was signed by Tiger)was a business partner of Brady, Chapman, Holland & Associates, Inc.(BCH). They are an insurance and risk management company based in Houston, Tx. The 1993 US Amateur Championship was being held at nearby Champions Golf Club. The USGA solicited certain members of the club to allow for some of the amateur golfers to stay at their residence instead of a hotel. In exchange for the them staying at the house, Tiger's Dad (Earl Woods) said to get some golf balls and Tiger would sign them. Brian Boales was invited over to the home on the Saturday following Tiger's Amateur loss to meet the young golfer. Tiger was sitting at the kitchen table signing BCH logo golf balls which were then handed out to the few invited guests, Brian Boales included.
James Spence Authentication(JSA) has reviewed this signature, and their letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
