1918 American Red Cross Florida St Golf Ass'n Sterling Winner's Medal - Gordon Gibbons
The American Red Cross sponsored a handful of golf tournaments during World War I, generating funds for the war effort. The US Open was cancelled in 1917 and 1918, allowing professional golfers to serve the country or travel around to Red Cross exhibition tournaments if they chose to do so. Teenage prodigy Bobby Jones was one of those golfers that played in Red Cross' golf tournaments. A revered symbol, the enamel of the red cross commands attention to Gordon Gibbons' 1918 medal that was awarded to him from the Florida State Golf Association for the Champs Division 2nd Flight. This World War I sterling silver period piece has a hallmark on the reverse, below the tournament flight and place of Gibbons. The piece has maintained its very good condition for more than a century. 1 3/4" x 1 1/4"
