Gary used to own his own golf equipment company before selling the company and subsequently joining the Calloway staff. Gary plays Calloway clubs today. The par saver wedge was used extensively during Gary’s Senior Championship playing days. This club shows significant match use. The consignor of this item got to know and work closely with Mr. Player when he wrote the original business plan than raised money for his golf equipment company. In addition, his wife at the time, Linda Shaifer, was Gary Player's North American Business Manager/ Agent, for five years prior to the birth of his daughter. Linda worked for the PGA of America then became Gary's personal agent. Gary used the par saver wedge, the signature club of the Gary Player Golf Equipment Company for just shy of two years. You can see how much Gary practices by noticing how worn down the grip and face of the club are. This club was given to our consignor following a practice round that he played with Gary before the Toshiba Classic in San Diego. Gary had flown to San Diego from South Africa and as was usually the case he wanted to beat jet lag so stayed up the entire day after a red eye flight and our consignor played 36 holes with the Black Knight. The club face was not allowing Gary to spin the ball as much as he would like, so he gave it to our consignor as he told his famous Carnegie Hall story to those gathered around him. The story is Gary was in NYC and a passer by stopped to ask Gary, “how do you get to Carnegie Hall? Gary paused and answered in his heavy South African accent, practice my man practice.” As the consignor took the club he added, “and you Laddie need the practice.” While Gary is known for his walking through as he drove the ball, he is however most renowned for his exceptional bunker play. With this in mind the opportunity to own one of Gary’s tournament used wedges is quite special.
