c.1938 Sam Snead The Greenbrier Golf and Tennis Club Postcard - Rare Alternate "Rookie Card"?
Alternate rookie cards are gaining steam quickly, with deserving attention shifting to cards that are earlier and rarer than the legend's official rooking card (1948 Kelloggs issue a decade later). It was only his second year on the PGA Tour and The Slammer's home club of The Greenbrier wanted to celebrate their champion. This is a vintage sepia-toned postcard featuring legendary American professional golfer Sam Snead. The front of the card depicts Snead in a follow-through pose after a drive, dressed in period attire including a sweater vest and dress trousers. A printed facsimile signature of Sam Snead is located across the lower portion of the image. The bottom margin contains a printed caption identifying him as the Sensational Golf Professional at The Greenbrier Golf and Tennis Club, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The reverse side features a biographical paragraph describing Snead as a sensational 26-year-old professional and notes his nickname, Slammin Sam. Based on Snead's 1912 birth date, the text dates this postcard to approximately 1938. The back includes a standard Post Card header and a designated box for a one-cent postage stamp.
