c.1906 The "Cert" Pat Applied For F. H. Ayres Ltd. London Croquet Style Putter

Four putting cross-hatched faces/surfaces are to be had on this 'patent applied for' rarity. While the Dairy Queen Blizzard can be tipped upside down without falling out, this croquet-style putter is famous for being able to stand upright on its own without falling over. 'The Cert's' patent No. 8,336 by Sir Edward Levien Samuel of Hyde Park in London was dated April of 1906. It was manufactured, advertised and sold by the stamped F.H. Ayers as detailed in author Jeffrey Ellis' 'Clubmakers Art' book Volume II as part of the Multipurpose Clubs chapter. Why multi-purpose with four putter surfaces you ask? Two of these, both a long and short side of the rectangular prism, have the same loft with the others vertical. This example of the rare club remains in good condition, as detailed in the accompanying lot photos. 31 1/2"
