c.1904 Brown’s Patent Montrose Water Iron w/ Anderson & Blyth St. Andrews Shaft Stamp

With praise for his work, we draw a large part of this description from Jeff Ellis' work 'The Clubmaker's Art.' "The perforated cleek is marked 'Browns Patent' inside an oval on the 'ball' centrally located on the back of the head. The outline of a flower enclosed inside an oval is stamped in the center of the face. Brown's perforated cleeks came with either five or six slots. Initially, they were promoted as reducing, 'the wind pressure on the club and adding distance to the stroke' (Golfing, 28 Apr. 1904; 26)." Ellis also stated on page 262 more generally speaking, "Brown's rake irons, or water irons as they are sometimes called, are among the most famous of all golf collectibles. Mr. James Brown was a blacksmith in Montrose, North Britain." This seldom seen and highly collectible patent club exhibits an Anderson & Blyth St. Andrews shaft stamp just below the grip. Highly coveted and one of the leaders in the club and antique golf category, don't let this one elude you any longer. 38 1/2"
