c.1898-1902 Tom Skipper One-Piece Wood w/'T S E' & Tom Skipper Shaft Stamp

Here we provide an exceptionally rare acquisition opportunity, that of a one-piece club made by English native and highly accomplished golf industry contributor Tom Skipper. Clubmaker, professional, player, teacher and grounds keeper there was nothing he didn't do. Credited as one of the first 35 founding PGA of America members, he also attended the inaugural meeting on January 16, 1916. Skipper was the clubmaker for, while having an apprenticeship under, the great Harry Vardon from 1903 until 1909 - Vardon even won 1903 Open for fourth of six Champion Golfer of Year honors. Skipper worked at several country clubs from 1914-1928, after immigrating to the United States at 31 years of age, this including Pittsfield MA '14, Huntington '15, Pikesville MD '16, Suburban, Arlington MD '16, Rolling Road, Cantonville MD '24, Princess Anne, Norfolk VA 28. Skipper qualified for the 1926 US Open at Merion, took 9th in first Senior PGA Championship in 1937 and contested the Senior Championship from 1945 until around 1959 or thereafter. This turn-of-the-century one-piece is stamped 'TSE - Tom Skipper' on the crown and 'T Skipper' on the shaft. The sole insert on leading edge is affixed by three unique wooden pegs. Lead inserts are found in both the side of the head and poured into the sole cavity to enhance swing weight. Tell the story of Tom Skipper and the one-piece club that was up to Harry Vardon's own standards, all while adding a new maker to your collection. 40 1/2"
