c.1896 Spalding Baseball Player Die Cut

Companion piece to the die cut Spalding golfer that is widely recognized as one of the first golf cards in existence was this 'Baseball Player' from the same set. It was one of five Koerner & Hayes of Buffalo die cut cards in the set that featured different sports in which Spalding made equipment for. The reverse side of the card has Henry Chadwick's instructions on how to play the game of baseball and the birth of the National Association in 1867, along with all of the equipment necessary to play baseball from the canvas bags to a 'home-base of stone or metal.' In a marketing push, they suggest a special Spalding Boys' League ball for those under the age of 16. This baseball player is dressed in a black and grey uniform with a 'S' on his chest and sports a strong mustache. The bat remains intact, a fairly uncommon feature for these. The card no longer includes the stand up tab in the back, with very slight paper loss as common of most of its like examples. 3" x 5 1/2"
