c.1881 John Buchanan Long Nose Spoon

John Buchanan Jr. was born in Edinburgh in 1861. At the age of 20 years old he would travel to Musselburgh to learn clubmaking as an apprentice to Alexander Brown. A decade later, Buchanan would go out on his own to found Buchanan & Co. where they would try their luck at golf balls and finishing rods. Continuing to forge his own path, Buchanan's company would patent a turning and tapering machine for the club wooden shafts so effective that the smooth shaft was said to only need a light sandpaper rub and addition of the grip to be put in play. This example contains a slightly hooked face as detailed in photos. Here is an uncommon J. Buchanan stamped long nose spoon that remains in very good condition with a tight lead weight head insert, slight separation where the tip of the shaft meets the head, and ram's horn sole addition with round wooden pegs and a tight sueded russet grip built over the leather underlisting as a time-period a replacement. This rather unique grip style was the work of famed clubmaker Laurie Auchterlonie, previous owner of this Buchanan club. 38"
