c.1880 Blackheath Golfers Mezzotint - Framed
One of the most recognized golf prints was also the very first, 'The Blackheath Golfer.' Cross-referencing published sources differentiating between the unique versions and prints of the iconic 'The Blackheath Golfer' piece, this highly coveted example looks to be produced in only the c.1880 phase of publishing on 19th century quality woven paper and first in color. That second printing is this print by R. Powell (notated on top margin), engraved by Valentine Green (notated bottom right margin) and professionally framed with a tasteful, yet simple exhibition as to not take away attention from the piece itself. After this edition, the prints were primarily in color. Visible printing plate markings are impressed on the paper as depicted in numerous lot photos. All in all, this is a prized early mezzotint colorized version inferior to few but the original 1790 mezzotint print by Lemuel Francis Abbott in which there are less than 15 known. An the example of that original was offered in our 2022 January Auction and yielded a worthy sum of $19,617.
This originally commissioned image of Captain William Innis in his long red coat itself is familiar, as Lemuel Francis Abbott's 'The Blackheath Golfer' and remains one of the most published images in the history of golf. This piece of history, the forerunner of so many which have followed. The gentleman behind Innis is one of the retired local Greenwich, England sailors that were known to serve as caddies. 29 1/2" x 38"
