c.1857 Hand Hammered Gutty Ball with Very Faint Stamp/Mark

Characteristic of the hand-hammered gutty pattering hammer marks run around the two poles, split by a thick equator line of individual squares around the entire circumference. The exceeding scarcity of this 150 plus year old golf ball cannot be emphasized enough, surfacing for auction only on occasion and this gutty straight from a mature, highly advanced collection. This spectacular sphere demands inclusion in the finest ball collections and those with a focus on the rich history of the game of golf. There are some strike marks and paint loss spots, while it remains highly presentable. Upon close inspection it almost looks like there is perhaps an "LL" stamp as in Allan Robertson, but that has not been verified with the condition, age and paint. Should that be the case, work of the preeminent ballmaker of the time, this example would be among the most prized of its kind. Please examine the accompanying lot photos for a detailed condition report.
