(Early) 1894 Shinnecock Hills Golf Club Ladies Morton Cup Sterling Silver Trophy Bowl

Here we have the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club “Morton Cup” won by Marie L. Harrison. The background on the trophy is as follows: Per a July 22 1894, newspaper article in the New York Times on the Shinnecock Hills golf club, two competition cups were discussed . The Mead Cup was to be competed for by the gentlemen members of the club, and for the ladies, Mr. A. L. Morton offered a silver dish to be known as the Morton Trophy. In the February 23, 1896 New York Tribune there appeared an extensive article on women golf players in conjunction with the first USGA Women’s Amateur championship that had just been played in 1895. Among the woman golfers profiled was Marie Harrison. Within her profile it stated the following “ Shinnecock Hills certainly has the lion’s share of the first rank players, for, besides Mrs Brown and Mrs. Turnure, it claims another in the sister of the latter, Miss Marie Harrison. In the summer of 1894 Miss Harrison defeated all rivals and, while she was not as successful last year in the tournaments, she has become known as a golfer of exceptional endurance.” Thus although the Morton Cup trophy offered here has her name on it, it is not specifically dated but the article quoted above states she defeated all rivals in the 1894 ladies tournament at Shinnecock and thus we believe this is in fact the 1894 trophy. Note: a year later In the 1895 USGA Women’s Amateur Championship Marie Harrison would shoot an 80/70 150 total over the 18 holes to finish in 5 th place. The trophy itself was finely crafted by Black Starr and Frost of New York. It features a beautiful repousse floral design to the sides and measures 6 ½ “ in diameter and 2 ¼ “ high. Marked sterling on the bottom it weighs a substantive 10.4 ounces. The underside of the bowl is inscribed Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Morton Cup, won by, Marie Harrison This is an historically significant and museum worthy women’s golf trophy. Issued in the same year the USGA was founded, it is likely the first women’s golf trophy issued at Shinnecock and certainly it is amongst the earliest US women’s golf trophies in all of golf in the United States. Don’t miss this opportunity to add it to you collection.
