World Champion Armless Golfer Tommy McAuliffe Custom Clubs, Bag, Tickets, Photos, Signed & more

Rather than letting his accident slow him down or stop him, Tommy McAuliffe (1893-1960) used his physical setback as a springboard to achieve great things in golf and life. Designed specifically for 'World Champion Armless Golfer' Thomas 'Tommy' McAuliffe was this custom set of clubs by Spalding. Each club met its respective clubhead at a 90 degree angle. McAuliffe tragically lost both arms in a train accident at the age of 9 years old. Miraculously he would adapt by holding the grip of his club between his chin, neck and shoulder. Golfing, along with learning how to write, eat with his family, McAuliffe even founded his own successful Insurance company. He would go on to star in a moving golf exhibition not just throughout the United States, but also the world. An excellent caddy turned golfer, carding a career-best 85, McAuliffe played alongside Bobby jones, Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, Tommy Armour, Chick Evans and other golf luminaries.

Included along with Tommy McAuliffe's custom set of Spalding Robert T Jones Jr pyratone woods at irons with the distinctive 90 degree faces, as depicted in the accompanying lot photos, is an array of additional photos, tickets, stories and even an artist depiction of McAuliffe that helps tell his incredible journey. There is a framed exhibition ticket for McAuliffe's Heather Downs show framed tastefully, similarly presented is the framed photo next to Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, Jim Barnes and others, a Tommy McAuliffe signed publicity print, photo of him swinging the driver, putting on an exhibition with another gentleman infront of a backdrop, illustration of him writing his name with the below type 'to be used...on title page..(two colors), swinging an iron, mowing the lawn, riding on horse drawn trailer with his name on it, exhibition ticket from bout against Wallace Gamber the Ridgemont pro at his course, and finally his newspaper clipping decoupaged on a board with his nameplate. It is an instant museum-worthy display, just as World Champion Armless Golfer Tommy McAuliffe's story is.
