Worcester GC, The Western Hills CC, & Oak Hill CC Goat Club Medals - Seldom Seen
A passage in the September 1998 publication 'Through the Green' the ideology and origin of goat medals is articulated best.
"Have you heard of the phrase "to get one's goat"? In English horse racing, goats were used as stable mates to calm the highly-strung thoroughbreds, especially before race day...If a goat "went missing," a restless night ensued, and the odds for the horse's chance of victory diminished greatly...The phrase passed into a common usage meaning to take away that little extra so essential to winning, the spirit of the victor, without which, his fate is that of an also-ran."
The direct goat medal golfing reference used that background and is told in this expert from the publication:
At Nassau Country Club of Long Island, NY: A member had medals struck for his tournament. Its success was important for the following year and play style to continue at other clubs. The scheme was designed to have those that wouldn't normally play each other square off. Each member interested in playing got a goat medal with his name, allowing any holder of a goat medal to challenge another holder (match play, three-quarter handicap).
The three goat medals in this grouping are from Worcester GC, The Western Hills CC, & Oak Hill CC. Names are on the back of two: M.V. Bastian, J.B. Warren, with 000 on the final.Oak Hill and Worcester 1 1/2" diameter, The Western Hills 1 1/4" diameter
