This lot consists of a collection of original disbound pages comprising the illustrated article The Golfer's Conquest of America by Caspar Whitney. It was published in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Volume XCV, Number 569, dated October 1897. The article spans pages 696 through 713 and provides a historical account of the early development of golf in the United States. The text is accompanied by numerous black-and-white halftone and woodcut illustrations, including A View of the Chicago Links, portraits of early champions Charles B. Macdonald and J. G. Thorp, and various scenes of play such as The Scoffer's First Attempt, On the Green by Main Strength, and Lofting a Stymie. Also depicted are the Newport and Chicago clubhouses. The pages are in a loose quarto format. The bottom right corner of the first page features a handwritten date of 1897 and a stock number #12711 in pencil. The final page includes the header and opening illustration for a subsequent article titled Kilauea, the Home of Pele by Professor William Libbey, showing Mauna Loa as seen from Hilo.
