Walter Hagen's Personal Ascot Tie & Silver Colored Pin And Note
“I never wanted to be a millionaire. I just wanted to live like one,” Walter Hagen famously said. Well he did both. Sir Walter Hagen's personal ascot tie and silver colored pin, along with a handwritten note with explanation is offered in this lot - a rare item by way of The Haig's collection. Much of that was offered, including this high-class clothing accessory, at the Sporting Antiquities Massachusetts auction approximately 20 years ago in 1993. Ascots vs neckties? Ascots are tied in similar fashion (pun intended) to how a men's tie is folded, without an additional step and certainly much more en vogue during Hagen's days a century ago. If a tie were to be wrapped around the neck it would be a scarf or "neckerchief." The 11-time major winner looked like one off the course too.
The Open Championship official clothier Glenmuir reported on the 4-time Champion Golfer of the Year's large contribution to golf attire, "The style and panache New York-born Hagen brought to the game can’t be underestimated, in terms of its impact on the modern game. He wore perfectly tailored and eye-catching outfits that were more likely to be seen on Lords at the time, not common golfers."
Please inspect the accompanying lot photos, as the ascot tie shows the welcomed very slight overall wear that is to be expected. The Haig's The accompanying lot provenance note states: "One of Walters (Hagen) askot which he always wore. Silver pin replaced the usual common safety pin."
