Walter Hagen's Personal Accounting Ledgers and Desk Accessories w/ Addresses in his Handwriting from Estate
This collection consists of personal estate financial ledgers and address books belonging to professional golfer Walter Hagen (1892-1969) in which he himself wrote some of the names even using his signature "W" for a contact named 'Wallace' as depicted in photos, primarily dating from 1967 to 1969. The collection includes a personal accounting ledger housed in a small six-ring binder with a black textured leather or leatherette cover. The front is embossed with the word LEDGER and a stylized AV logo in gold. This ledger contains handwritten entries from January to June 1969, detailing expenses for household items, travel to Palm Desert and Traverse City, and nursing services provided by an L.P.N. at Munson Hospital.
Additional items include that aforementioned brown top-grain cowhide address and engagement book with gold-stamped scrollwork borders. The interior is gold-stamped with the names Rex Clay Products Co. and Rex Roto Corporation of Detroit, Michigan. It contains alphabetical tabs with various handwritten address entries and a weekly engagement section with Hagen handwritten entries including a telephone number and an address on Collingwood.
A brown leather note card box is also included, featuring a gold-leaf border on the lid and a suede-lined interior containing a stack of original blank white note cards.
The group further includes approximately 40 double-sided loose accounting ledger sheets dated circa 1967-1968 - these not in his hand but likely his assistant's. These sheets detail Hagen's transactions with various businesses in the Traverse City, Michigan area, including Hagan’s Fabric Care, Grand Traverse Electric Co., and Farm Bureau Services.
Documentation establishing provenance includes a COPY of the Certificate of Authenticity from Shelby J. Plyler, dated 2000, which traces the collection from the estate of Walter Hagen through his companion Doris Brandes. A typed inventory list is also included on second page, which itemizes these specific archival materials.
