Walter Hagen's Golf Ball Paperweight, Golf Pencils & Tees from Estate
This lot consists of an assortment of vintage golf items identified by the accompanying provenance as being from the estate of legendary American professional golfer Walter Hagen. The centerpiece is a vintage brass spinning paperweight game. The square base is embossed on each side with the scoring terms HOLE IN ONE, BIRDIE, BOGIE, and PAR. The center features a golf ball resting on a tee, topped with a sharp metal spindle designed for spinning to determine a score. The underside of the base retains four protective felt pads. The collection includes a large quantity of standard vintage wooden golf tees in various shades of red, burgundy, and natural wood, along with a smaller group of specialty tees. These specialty items include a gold-tone metal tee, a red plastic tee, and two traditional wooden tees. Notable novelty examples include a yellow wooden tee printed with the phrase FOR TALL GOLFERS WITH SHORT CLUBS and a yellow plastic tripod-style tee embossed with PEE GEE TEE and PAT. PEND. Also included are four short vintage golf pencils in red with white racing stripes, yellow, dark green, and navy blue, as well as a rectangular yellow cleaning cloth with a red overlocked edge.
The collection is accompanied by a COPY of the letter of authenticity for The Walter Hagen Collection signed by Shelby J. Plyler of Tustin, Michigan. The document provides a narrative history of the items, stating they were acquired from the estate of Doris Brandes, Hagen's long-time companion, following her passing in 1989. An associated inventory list from the Walter Hagen Estate specifically identifies the Brass Hole-in-One paperweight included in this lot.
