The PGA of America Hall of Fame originated in 1940 at the suggestion of famed sportswriter Grantland Rice. It is the highest honor that the PGA of America can bestow upon a member. The original charter class of '40 contained ten members which included Walter Hagen. In 1993, the PGA of America ceased PGA World Golf Hall of Fame operations in Pinehurst and subsequently relocated to the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine , Florida. The highest award of career achievement in golf measures 13" x 17" in plague format. The complete text of the honor reads as follows "Awarded by the Professional Golfers Association of America to Walter Hagen in recognition of his election to the PGA Golf's Hall of Fame in the year 1940. By the golf professionals and sports press of the nation as having made one of the outstanding contributions to golf in the history of the game." Some 80 years after this award was bestowed to Hagen it remains in excellent condition displaying only minor handling wear. Verso of plague carries manufacturers sticker from Scroll Studio of Chicago, where the PGA headquarters were located in the 1940's. Deserving of prominent display in the most advanced collection or museum setting. Letter of Provenance from PGA of America Historian comes with this lot.
