Walter Hagen Signed 1928 Exhibition Match Ticket - Bobby Jones/Farrell vs Walter Hagen/Sarazen
On September 5, 1928 Woodland Country Club in Auburndale, Massachusetts hosted perhaps the finest Exhibition Match group ever fielded. Even more spectacularly, a fortunate patron was able to secure the Champion Golfer of the Year Walter Hagen's pencil signature across the frontside of their ticket with the four biggest names in golf. He didn't want to be a millionaire necessarily, just wanted to live like one. Both ended up being accurate, also retiring with 11 major championships which was the most at that time. This contest was a mere ten days before Bobby Jones would defend his US Amateur Championship title 10 & 9 at Brae Burn CC not too far away in West Newton, Massachusetts. The Bobby Jones/Johnny Farrell pairing was reminiscent of just months prior when the two squared off in the 36-hole US Open playoff, Farrell besting Jones by just a single stroke. A similar story with their foes that day, Walter Hagen topping Gene Sarazen by a pair of strokes for the 1928 Claret jug at Royal St. George's GC on May 11th. The ticket itself was used, with two (and a half) hole punches, and it was put on to 'Benefit American PGA Ryder Cup Team.' The off-white octagonal ticket with a red double boarder, and Spalding Golf Balls advertisement on the verso, remains in excellent condition with original string and additional handwritten notations from the patrion.
