Vintage Tom Morris Spliced Neck Wood with Tom Morris St. Andrews N.B. Shaft Stamp

Here is a splice neck club boasting the stamp of Old Tom 'T. MORRIS' on its crown. There is a small chip out of the ram's horn sole insert on the leading edge held in by round wooden pegs. Customary of long nose and transitional clubs of this time, it carries a lead weight in the backside that is starting to come out as shown in the accompanying lot photos. The light wood stain shows the stamp well. Whipping remains intact, joining the wooden shaft with the 'T Morris - St Andrews' circle shaft stamp.

Narrowly defeated in the initial British Open Championship in 1860,"Old Tom" went on to win four of the first eight Open's (1861,62,64,67). On the heels of that success he served as Greenskeeper at St. Andrews from 1865-1904.He played in every British Open to 1896 when he was was 75 years old. An accomplished ball and club maker, "Old Tom" gained much acclaim for his design work with Royal County Down, Lahinch in Ireland and of course Muirfield to his credit. He passed away in 1908 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1976.41 1/2"
