Vintage Hand Painted Cast Iron Golfer Doorstop Originating from Nestor's Sport Shop in Limerick
Wander down the streets of Limerick, Ireland and, just like most, they aren't what they used to be. Holding up the door for incoming and outgoing customers, young and old, perhaps a fisherman buying bait, or a seasoned golfer beginning the season with a new set of irons, was this cast iron doorstop at Nestor's Sports Shop. Hand painted post-swing golfer that measures 21" tall, and excelling at his job with a weight exceeding 15lbs. Donning plus fours, intense concentration and at the top of his swing, original paint still all but covers the frontside surface. The driver in which he was wielding is firmly skrewed into the hand. Minute paint chipping and patina adds to the origin story, one in which it aided foot traffic into one of Ireland's most trusted sports equipment retailers of the day.
Local residents still remember their time at the shop in the 1940's and 1950's fondly, with this quote from an Irishman on their Limerick web page, "Nestor’s the famous sports store, the joy of every child getting Dinky cars or a new bike, roller skates or fishing rods? The Nestor family, Lila, Joe, Gussy gave as much attention to the child with their 6d. to spend as the business man spending 100 on golf or tennis gear. This was a wonderous shop with a upstairs and downstairs where Derek Nestor worked on bicycle repairs."
