Vintage Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Custom Persimmon Wood Golf Club
This vintage golf club is a custom-made persimmon wood featuring a glossy black finish on the club head crown. The head is decorated with two primary gold-tone markings: a crown atop a wreath encircling the letters BH, which is the logo for the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, and a gold-tone facsimile signature of Arnold Palmer in cursive script. Beneath the signature is the word custom in lowercase letters. The clubface features a decorative two-toned wooden insert with a dark reddish-brown center section flanked by lighter natural wood tones, secured by four brass-colored screws in a diamond pattern. The club is fitted with a stepped steel shaft and a black leather wrap grip. Near the base of the grip is a gold-tone logo for a Neumann leather grip featuring a bull's head. Black thread whipping is present and intact at the hosel. 44 1/2"
The Fred Simmons Collection
Co-owner with Arnold Palmer of the ProGroup out of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Fred Simmons was as networked in the golf industry as they came. There Simmons developed the Palmer Peerless, a then innovative persimmon driver. While at ProGroup he would assist in designing courses and travel the world with his knowledge of the game, passing it on to anyone that Simmons crossed paths with. "I have a good friend there. Call them and mention my name and they will take care of you," he was famous for saying to those close to him. Immersed in golf club design, Simmons became close with Ben Hogan while Chairman of the Board at his equipment company with his namesake. Simmons and Hogan were golf partners at Colonial, Brook Hollow etc. in the 1970's when they weren't in Hogan's Fort Worth plant examining clubs. Simmons would bring Valerie Hogan vintage photos that brought back memories and forth stories.
