Tom Morris Putting at St. Andrews 1890 Colored Chromolithograph by Nevison Arthur Loraine

This rare colored lithograph was published by C. Klackner, London. Depicting a stymied Tom Morris about to putt in what appears to be a foursome match on the Old Course, the town of St. Andrews in addition to the R&A is viewed in the background. The printed signature of Nevison Arthur Loraine is in the front bottom left hand corner. Its composition boasts excellent presentation value, with vibrant color added throughout the busy golf scene showcasing the father of golf Old Tom Morris. Jet black outlines depict Morris center stage on the green, surrounded by attentive competitors and gallery members in the foreground. Additional attention to detail was used by Loraine to recreate the endlessly historic Royal & Ancient clubhouse backdrop. Adhesive has been placed on the backside in the bottom corner, along with slight expected discoloration on the verso and slight edging loss as seen in photos, not visible when appreciating the antique artwork. The cardstock image itself measures 15 1/2" x 26 3/4."

Tom Morris, affectionately known as 'Old Tom', was a 19th century pioneer of golf. The British Open winner, club maker, green-keeper, and course designer was perhaps the most influential figure in the history of golf. Allan Robertson taught Tom the golf trade, from making feathery golf balls to clubs. After leaving St. Andrews in 1851 to his new position at Prestwick Golf Club, he eventually returned in 1865. With the new skills learned at Prestwick, Tom went about rejuvenating St Andrews by establishing separate tee boxes on each hole, widening the fairways, enlarging the greens and building two new ones and actively managing the hazards. Tom introduced many of the course design ideas that are the blue print for today's modern designers, creating the 18 hole course (St Andrews had originally 22 holes) and having each nine holes return to the club house.
