Tiger Woods & others Complete Signed 1996 SI for Kids Sports Legends Uncut Card Sheet
Scour through the (light) blue sea of now just north of 2,200 Tiger Woods 1996 Sports Illustrated For Kids PSA submissions with the utmost precision on the 30th anniversary of its release and only 9 examples of this cornerstone Tiger card debut carrying his easily recognizable signature will be revealed. Conversely there are only six graded examples of the much more colorful 9-card sheets/panels in the PSA population report and not a single one is signed. Each of the usually "handcut", perforated edge, notoriously condition-sensitive cards were signed including the center Tiger Woods with a time-period black sharpie example to Theo! Only adding to the provenance, that name is Theo Chen from Southern California who would write for and mention this very Tiger signed 1996 SI for Kids card sheet in the first issue of Beckett Golf Collector magazine! For reference is the penultimate listing photo, a montage of the issue and highlighted verbiage in which Theo even mentioned the words "sheet" and "personalization", as well as showing a companion GSV signed card from his collection. Based out of Southern California, Chen would then get the eight additional athletes to complete the near impossible feat.
The Golf Auction proudly presents the best of the best, a card (sheet) of colossal proportions - Tiger Woods' first Rookie Card with his early sharpie penmanship with the above inscription across the center depiction also in his hand. Filling out the sheet of nine to elevate this examples rarity and almost certainly one-of-a-kind nature are signatures from the eight others on the sheet highlighted by Sports Illustrated: Lisa Leslie (HOF), Jerry Stackhouse, Curtis Martin (HOF), Michael Finley, Martina Hingis (HOF), Ed Jovanovski, Chen Lu & Doug Flutie (CFHOF) then of the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. Staple publication Sports Illustrated For Kids celebrated the soon-to-be star with his first card issuance in the December 1996 magazine, promptly coordinated and released as part of a 9 card sheet positioned for kids to rip out following the phenom's August 29th announcement to become professional after three US Amateur victories in a row (pictured here at the 1996 US Amateur). Tiger Woods didn't just move the needle, he was - and still is the needle. Fans of golf wait with baited breath for the 5-time Masters and 15-time major winner's every move, a polarizing figure inside and outside of the ropes. This complete signed card sheet is firmly positioned in the upper-echelon of not only Tiger Woods cards, but the larger categories of both Golf and Sports Cards. In December 2024 The Golf Auction offered a VG-Ex 4 graded card (only) with a 10 signature and it commanded $28,492 after 27 bids.
Elite Tiger Woods card industry comparisons remain a very short, but potent list for investors: 1) 2001 Tiger Woods SP Authentic Golf “Authentic Stars” Autograph Gold #45 Rookie Card /100 Sold by Goldin Auctions in April 2021 for $369,000 and 2) 2001 Tiger Woods SP Authentic Golf “Authentic Stars” Autograph #45 Rookie Card /900 also from Goldin Auctions with a realized price of $105,000. To note there is some whitening on the top of the Woods card not affecting the image or signature as depicted in the accompanying lot photos. Invest in this card sheet today - a valuable commodity which carries no reserve for an absolute sale and inclusion in an elevated collection portfolio! James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their FULL letter of authenticity (JSA #BB98946) authenticating each of the nine signatures comes with this lot.
