Tiger Woods & Phil Mickelson Signed 1998 Nissan Open Official Used Scorecard

Rather remarkably, here lies the official used scorecard from only the fourth time friends and foes Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson squared off at the 1998 Nissan Open, but in 1998 the word "friends" would have been taken out of the relationship descriptors. “He’s one hell of a competitor and it’s always a challenge to try to beat him,” Woods said of Mickelson in a story published on ESPN May 22, 2020. Over the years the competitive stars with a collection of major championship trophies have found themselves in the same place at the same time on countless occasions. A friendship has grown from the decades old seeds of mutual respect.

This dual signed, Tiger marked this Nissan (LA Open) scorecard was likely the final Tiger Vs Phil scorecard not collected by the PGA Tour after the tournament - a practice that started in the year 2000. Phil would outplay Tiger during this first round of the tournament on January 26th at the Valencia Club, the tournament that gave Tiger his first PGA Tour start in 1992. The polarizing figures were brought together for "The Match; Tiger vs Phil" for $9 million in Las Vegas on Thanksgiving twenty years later to give sports fans another opportunity to see the head-to-head they wanted to see on the golf course on their television. Phil had the upper hand this day shooting a 4-under 67 this round in 1998, edging Tiger' 68. Tiger would finish the 1998 Nissan Open runner-up, falling to Billy Mayfair in the playoff. "Our relationship turned around 2016 when we were working together for the Ryder Cup,'' Mickelson said on the Dan Patrick radio show in 2020. "He was an assistant captain. We spent a lot of time on the phone. When we worked together for a common goal, it brought us closer.'' The saga will continue for years, with this scorecard being a significant conversation started between passionate golf fans for much longer. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
