Tiger Woods' Pro Debut 1996 GMO First Career Made Cut Friday Official PGA USED Scorecard
"Hello World" is right! There are professional debuts and then there is what Tiger Woods did at the 1996 Greater Milwaukee Open. The tour stop that rarely attracted national media attention was put in position to hold the then decorated amateur Tiger's big announcement presser. Unchartered waters led to it taking place in an impromptu, locally rented tent from a restaurant down the road on that tournament-eve Wednesday. It was a standing room-only spectacle event that even an inattentive, tenured fire marshal would shut down. Young Tiger's Milwaukee, WI stay was elongated when he made his first cut in his first try - providing the 4th round on-course highlight that no one expected. Standing on the 14th tee in his earned Sunday at Brown Deer Golf Club, Tiger firmly gripped his club and swung with his patented precise fury - finding the bottom of the cup for his first professional hole-in-one! Two skips, a short roll, fist pump and a high five with the yet-to-be famous caddie Fluff next to a brand new Titleist bag. The roar of the raucous crowd was a (billboard) sign of things to come. This was all made possible by his Friday round of 2-under 69 for a 136 two round-total and his first cut made as a professional in his debut. Woods has now amassed 339 PGA Tour cuts, and counting!
A true market test for this scorecard came in our March 2023 auction when we offered his 1996 GMO final round Sunday, only to commanded a still-standing scorecard record of $125k! Used in the 1996 Greater Milwaukee Open August 30th Second Round Friday, the official scorecard exhibits Tiger Woods’ time-period pencil signature on the bottom left ‘Competitor’ line on the erased signature of that day's marker John Elliot. In type in the upper left-hand corner is ‘Woods, Tiger’ and his hometown of ‘Cypress, Ca.’ Co-signer Elliott was the playing partner that had a front row seat to the first professional cut episode of the Tiger Woods Show. The 69 ensured he would see the weekend, on his way to a cumulative 277 score that first week. From a macrolevel, this red and blue scorecard represents the only tournament-used item from that day - Tiger Woods' first cut as a professional. This is THE visual 18-hole cut-making visual with Tiger's pencil stamp of approval. A patrons ticket from this tournament garnered $99,000 in 2022 (yes, a ticket). There were thousands of tickets made but offered here is the one and only hole in one scorecard!
"I Guess, Hello World." These four words were said with a youthful smile at the eve presser of his professional debut at the 1996 Greater Milwaukee Open by the then 3-time US Amateur champion. In front of a vintage Miller Lite logo tournament backdrop the first of many iconic professional moments occurred - a great start to the week in which 20-year-old Tiger Woods' competed for all four rounds, notching his first professional cut made. Multiple of Woods' most impressive records during his storied career is cut-oriented, be it the 142 consecutive cuts streak from 1998 to 2005 or his 24 straight at The Masters tallied only a month ago. First's remain crucial in the hobby, with this the single known artifact from Tiger's first pro cut!
