Tiger Woods' First PGA Tournament 1992 Nissan LA Open Debut Riviera Member Badge
Only 44 examples of this badge/ticket are found the PSA's population report (fulls, stubs and badges combined), compare that to his Upper Deck rookie card of over 40,000, 2,000+ of his '96 SI for Kids and even the 1996 GMO ticket of just over 100 between the three admission types. Since the beginning of 2024 that quantity of (44) 1992 LA Open tickets has increased by just 14, unlike the others. The numbers are staggering, but expected. Who was going to save the ticket of the local teenager's first PGA tournament? Here is the exclusive Riviera Member badge #905 used for that full week Feb. 23-March 1st boasting strong aqua coloring, with some slight staining depicted in the accompanying lot photos.
Taking a couple days off of school and heading to the golf course to play in a professional tournament as a 16 year-old Sophomore in high school sounds like a dream many have had. For Tiger Woods in 1992 it was reality. Playing his first tournament on a sponsor's exemption at Riviera only a half of an hour away, Woods became the youngest male competitor in an official tour event that week. Sports Illustrated writer John Garrity even titled his four-page story about the monster event in the March 9, 1992 issue "You the Kid!': Tiger Woods, 16, proved he could make the grade, if not the cut, in his PGA Tour debut!"
Here it is, the seldom seen badge for that event that was produced for the host club's elite that week used February 23rd to March 1st. The aqua blue and white 'Riviera Member' in bold, white printing as depicted in the accompanying lot photos, used and with its original pin. While it was not a win, much more significant, this tournament was truly Tiger Woods' coming out party on the professional level. More than likely some of his competitors that week knew that they had to get their wins then before Woods was on the tour to stay. Here it is. Investors, collectors and sports memorabilia analysts rejoice..
