Tiger Woods Signed Debut 1992 Nissan Open First Swing Original Photo w/Time Period JSA 10 Signature
Time-period signed 16-year-old debut original '1st swing' photo - yes, you read that right! Tiger Woods' first action in a PGA Tour sanctioned event came that Wednesday Nissan Los Angeles Open Pro-Am on February 26, 1992 at Riviera. Astutely one photographer with a front row spot captured Amateur Woods mid-drive in his very first swing on hole 1 right in front of the gallery lined clubhouse found on 1992 Kodak paper here! The best of the best. Wearing tournament colors, solid aqua pants with a matching white 1990's style polo geometric in design and an AJGA hat Woods was ready for the camera flashes. Woods won 8 of 13 American Junior Golf Association tournament in which he entered from 1991-1993. The 'Nissan Los Angeles Open' circle logo branded signage spotted just to the right. Better yet, this original Kodak photo stamped June 1992 on its verso carries a flawless time-period black sharpie signature just above his head. His ever-changing signature would shorten up in 1994 before it would again elongate, this being the prep star's less-practiced and less-given time-period formation in which you could read every letter.
Taking a couple days off of school and heading to the golf course to play in a professional tournament as a 16 year-old Sophomore in high school sounds like a dream many have had. For Tiger Woods in 1992 it was reality. Playing his first tournament on a sponsor's exemption at Riviera only a half of an hour away, Woods became the youngest male competitor in an official tour event that week. Sports Illustrated writer John Garrity even titled his four-page story about the monster event in the March 9, 1992 issue "You the Kid!': Tiger Woods, 16, proved he could make the grade, if not the cut, in his PGA Tour debut!" James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their full letter of authenticity with 10 grade accompanies this lot.
This photo is pictured in the accompanying book written by our consignor on page 46 ' A Letter to the Youth of America: The Randolph Collection' An Anthology by Jessica and Jesse Randolph.
