Robert 'Bobby' T. Jones, Jr. Signed 1954 Ltd Ed Thomas Stephens USGA Print #122 to Leland Gibson
One of the most famous works of golf art remains Thomas Stephens' portrait of a post-swing Bobby Jones. This lot features USGA's 1954 print of this is signed by the subject in Bobby Jones to Leland Gibson just below the image. The signature and inscription are on the actual print just below the work, with an off-white rectangular surrounding it. You will see that the inscription runs out of that area onto the white of the print margin on top, a signature that has been preserved by the PGA of America and is darker than most you will see on this print. Bobby Jones is widely considered a pioneer in the game of golf, reaching unparalleled success as a chosen amateur golfer propelling him quickly to mythical status. The career lawyer that co-founded the Augusta National Golf Club and a life-long amateur golfer. Merely mentioning Bobby Jones had an impact on The Masters would be selling him extremely short. He was The Masters, from building Augusta National Golf Club the way he envisioned doing it to starting the "Invitation Tournament" in 1934. The first playing was only four years of course after his Grand Slam year of 1930 in which he won the US Open, US Amateur, Open Championship and British Amateur. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
