This lot comprises two vintage softcover guidebooks for Edinburgh, Scotland, providing a detailed look at the citys tourism in the early 20th century. The first volume is titled The New Illustrated Guide to Edinburgh by John Reid, published by Andrew Elliot of 17 Princes Street, Edinburgh. This guide is bound in red paper wrappers with black lettering and a central illustration of Edinburgh Castle. It features extensive period advertising, including McVitie and Price Digestive Biscuits on the front cover and Waverley Fountain Pens on the rear. A notable feature is a large multi-panel fold-out advertisement for Scotch specialties such as knitwear and coats from 143 George Street. The second volume is the Edinburgh Official Guide, priced at sixpence and bound in grey textured paper wrappers. The cover features a blue ink vignette of St Giles Cathedral and the citys coat of arms. This guide includes black and white photographic illustrations of landmarks such as Princes Street and Holyroodhouse, as well as a tipped-in color plate titled Hanover Street from a sketch by Charles Napier, R.S.W. The rear cover displays a prominent advertisement for the Scottish Motor Traction Co. Ltd. illustrating a vintage motor coach for tours to the Trossachs and Loch Lomond.
