Rare RTJ Tom Stewart Irons w/Inspection Marks - 1 Iron-9 Iron (Missing 3 Iron)

Instantly recognizable to the club collectors in the know. Tom Stewart was a renowned steel club head maker, the choice of golfing royalty. Old Tom Morris used the clubs Stewart produced. Morris wasn't Stewart's only fan, as he made steel heads for the likes of clubmakers like the McEwans, the Auchterlonies, and the Forgans, as well as golfers such as James Braid, Francis Ouimet, and Bobby Jones. Jones was in jeopardy of losing his amateur status with Stewart using his name in making the clubheads so Jones asked that he stopped. Stewart resumed production after Jones' 1930 grand slam season and subsequent retirement. This club bears the pipe stamp as well as stamping of the head professional W. Yeoman of Chicago is found on the backside of the head, and the highly significant and collectible R.T.J. Dark/strong stamps are found on each head including the stovepipe. There are said to be approximately 10 matched sets in existence. These clubs were bought individually from 1926 or so until 1930. The key inclusions were the spade mashie, mashie niblick and iron. Tom Stewart personally built or inspected the matched sets. Substituted for the three iron in this set is the stamped 5 iron, as that club acts as it since it appears to have less loft and is longer as shown in photos. The niblick could have been stamped as a 9 for all intensive purposes. 'W. Yeoman' is stamped on each shaft. Two dots are found below the numbers on the 6 and 9 irons. Please inspect the accompanying lot photos for a detailed condition report.
