Rare Bobby Jones 1929 Dockman & Sons Star Player Candy Card #33 - Only One Known
"Have you ever seen this card?" was the question circulating around the office when images appeared of the possible consignment surfacing for the first time since it was purchased. Purchased, at of all places, an estate sale in the early 1990's with two aviation cards from the same set - because of course it was. It now sits as perhaps both the 'holy grail' and 'white whale' of Bobby Jones cards.
The set itself is a known card hobby entrant, with a simplistic design featuring the sepia tone subject image and name front and a concise verso bio topped off by the set card number. The 1929 John H. Dockman & Sons Star Player Candy set was also known for achieving big numbers at auction, including Babe Ruth for $65,485 at Memory Lane 9/9/2023. Bobby Jones was part of this primarily baseball and pilot set? We had no idea and neither did others what we spoke with - there had never been a Bobby Jones #33 example accounted for, until now that is. These cards were originally distributed with candy (ex. 30 gum balls) one card at a time in glassine envelope packs and sealed with a staple. While there are 21 cards in the PSA population report, mostly consisting of Ruth's and Lou Gehrig's (12/21), there is not a single hobby entrant of Bobby Jones. In the set numbered directly after Gehrig #32, here is the ONLY KNOWN Bobby Jones Card #33. Johnny Farrell is the only discovered golfer in the 1929 set, in addition to the recently discovered Jones. The card's verso reads: 'Bobby Jones is conceded abroad and in the United States as the world's greatest amateur golfer. He won the British Open Golf Championship for two successive years.' While condition is far less important when it is describing a one-of-one piece, this card and the rest of the 1929 Dockman & Sons Star Player set had more challenges once sharing packing with candy. This incredible find, pre-Grand Slam card's condition is fair at best, and includes the whole Jones likeness, most of the background and player write up print with only slight paper loss in the right-side white column with slight discoloration (possibly due to the candy) for accuracy purposes only.
